THE YEAR OF LESS IS MORE
(but sadly most acts went for More)
or
THE YEAR OF IF ONLY
(If only Ukraine wasn’t in it, thinks Russia. If only Australia wasn’t in it, thinks Russia. If only there wasn’t a jury vote, thinks Russia. If only Ukraine wasn’t in it, thinks Australia. If only we were in it, thinks Romania…)

Russia and Australia blew everyone out of the water this year. But Ukraine prevailed.

THE OFFICIAL TOP THREE:
Ukraine
Australia
Russia

MY TOP THREE (in alphabetical order):
Hungary
Israel
Poland

israel 2016cI have a dilemma. I cannot award douze points to a song with a human hula hoop. I just can’t. On the other hand, if this was a song contest, Israel would win. Well, it is a song contest, but you know what I mean. It’s not just about the song. It’s about the pyrotechnics and tight white t-shirt and astronaut suit and…

Here goes.

HUNGARY
FREDDIE. PIONEER.
hungary 2016eSeemed  a little shaped by Polina’s power ballad last year. But fantastic stomp your feet sing-along anthem. And I’m always impressed by back-up singers who can clap. And whistle. But not at the same time. That would be too much. Go boys, especially you, the one in the middle.
hungary 2016cBut, no offence intended, consider this: did the song require an energetic Shaolin monk impersonator?
hungary 2016dThere was a mention of ‘temple’ in the lyrics so I can see the thematic link but sometimes less is more.

poland 2016b

POLAND
MICHAL SZPAK. COLOR OF YOUR LIFE.
Loved it. Traditional big power ballad with lots of RED, black nail polish and sensitive violin-playing. Michał Szpak’s pirate persona won him a lot of fans. Personally I loved his over-emoting. Big, bold and you just have to sing along. If only the lyrics were a bit weightier. All together now: O-o-o-o try to ask your heart who you really are…

israel 2016bISRAEL
HOVI STAR. MADE OF STARS.
Israel! This was the song of songs. Beautiful musical structure. Exquisite performance and lyrics were sublime (well, I’d work on the ‘million faces tied in chains’ bit). But, all in all, as far from banal as can be. Hooray! Hovi, ditch the  human hula hoop…all we need is the song, the hair and the midnight blue.

SPECIAL MENTION TO:
GERMANY. Jamie-Lee. Ghost.
Original, creative & haunting. Gorgeous to behold. Should have been Top Ten.germany 1026

moldova 2016MOLDOVA. Lidia Isac. Falling Stars.
Catchy little pop song. Should have got through to the final. Not that I’m blaming the spaceman but.

THE END
